Antibioticsware used to specifically combat bacterial infections. The more often a particular bacterium comes into contact with an antibiotic, the higher the probability that resistance, i.e. a survival mechanism, will be developed. Therefore, antibiotics should only be administered ifurgent cases.
Antibiosis: “A relationship between living beings that causes harm to one of the parties by inhibiting its growth and/or reproduction or by killing it.”

Infectious diseases are just as important for animal health as they are for human medicine. In addition, infectious diseases in farm livestock populations cause serious economic damage. The use of antibiotics not only serves to cure animals, but also prevents the transmission of pathogenic bacteria from animals to humans (zoonoses). This benefits people who have contact with animals (for example farmers and their families, or dog owners and their families) as well as consumers of food and other products that come from animals. The following applies to the food chain:Healthy food can only be obtained from healthy animals.
Antibiotics should only be used in animals if this is necessary for therapeutic reasons. The use of antibiotics in animal husbandry promotes the development and spread of resistant bacteria. Antibiotic resistance means that the pathogens are insensitive to certain antibiotics.
❗The use of antibiotics in animal husbandry can contribute to the resistance problem in human medicine.
The emergence and spread ofAntibiotic resistancecan only be achieved through thecareful use of antibioticsin theHuman and veterinary medicinelimit.
During food production, resistant germs from animal production can be transferred to food, e.g. meat or milk. Resistant pathogens can be transmitted to humans via food, but also through direct animal contact.en and may cause infections. If treatment is required but the antibiotic used does not work, infections with resistant germs may last longer or be more severe.
Flowchart of the determinants of antibiotic resistance in each reservoir: The areas where antibiotics are administered are marked in blue.
